Nine Tips for a Great Weekend

  1. Wake up early and watch the sunrise.  If you are with someone, try to keep talking to a minimum. I promise this will get you off to a better start than sleeping late will.
  2. Have a breakfast that powers you. Once you buy the ingredients it’s easy and you can make them all week long!
  3. Get cozy on your couch or back in bed with a stack of books that inspire you (the library is a great resource for loading upon these); poetry, art, design, recipes, style inspiration, and let your creative mind absorb.
  4. Go out for fish and chips and a cold beer at your local pub with people you love.
  5. Take a very long walk. Notice. Smell the flowers, the air.
  6. Make a slow cooked dinner one night. Begin early enough so there is no rush. Listen to classical or opera while you stir and simmer.
  7. Sit for a quiet heart-to-heart with your sweetie or good friend. No TV, no interruptions, just free flowing conversation. Let yourself be vulnerable.
  8. Have a good laugh with your kids. Make an effort to let yourself laugh easily. Be silly.
  9. Choose a small project area to complete one afternoon; run your donations to Goodwill; clean off one shelf in the closet; throw out all the old stuff in the fridge.

Oh and this! – Get a chore or two that you would normally reserve for the weekend done today or tomorrow instead. An especially good one to get out of the way is your grocery shopping. This frees up time for renewal rather than more doing, doing, doing.

“For most of life, nothing wonderful happens. If you don’t enjoy getting up and working and finishing your work and sitting down to a meal with family or friends, then the chances are that you’re not going to be very happy. If someone bases his happiness or unhappiness on major events like a great new job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person isn’t going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness.”
~ Andy Rooney

Comments – What else? What do you do to ensure you’re going to have a great weekend? What are your staples? How do you prepare? What would you add to the list above?

  1. I wish we could go to the pub for fish, chips and a beer, but here it’s all gourmet heaven… miss British fish and chips! But this weekend we are heading into NYC for some fun for the day and Sunday, laying in bed catching up on reading, movies with an unhealthy breakfast of bacon and eggs…our treat of the week… ahh bliss :)
