Brief Bits Friday is the beginning of what I am thinking may be a series of smaller posts on Friday’s to open up some of the thoughts, epiphanies, struggles, or just general interestingness floating by on this Good Life Road. Happy Friday.
What kind of a strange irony is it to be simultaneously pulled to create and to have continuous flags thrown in the way? I woke up today, as I do quite often, determined to “do the work”. For me, that means writing. But whether or not you like to write, it is a truth that we are simultaneously pulled to art – our creations as well as the art that is the way we live and design our lives – and to destruction. The word destruction sounds dramatic but more often it can be worse than that, the destruction is not obvious. It comes in the form of ‘resistance’ as Steven Pressman calls it in The War of Art.
Resistance is everything you let get in the way
All the things you are doing while you are thinking, I should be doing _____. I should be writing.
It’s just like the art of prioritization where you write down all the things you need to do and you order them according to priority. One of the telltale ways to know if you have not truly ranked them in their correct order of priority is when you are constantly pulled by a nagging need to be doing one of the other items on the list.
If something constantly pulls at your mind it is likely, for whatever reason, that item is the true first priority for the day. Writing is this way for me. It is always hovering there. Unless I have spent a dedicated amount of time doing it my mind will always be halfway on it.
Is there something like that for you? Is there a work you feel pulled to do but constantly find obstacles of your own making jumping in front? Is there a resistance you face that is so insidious that sometimes you aren’t even able to recognize it as resistance, until maybe uh now? Oh I have a few.
*I leave you with this food for thought…“Your position on just about everything, including, yes, your salary, your stock options, your credit card debt and your mortgage are almost certainly based on the story you tell yourself, not some universal fact from the universal fact database.” – Seth Godin
