Human beings have an innate drive to create and when we do we feel a deep sense of satisfaction. But what I’m discovering now is that creating something new is an immensely satisfying experience no matter how big or small the creation. Whether you write a post, bake a batch of homemade cookies, or build a book shelf, if it’s never been in existence before, in quite the way that you have made it, it’s one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have.
For people who have always been creators this may seem obvious but I tell you this because I did not know it myself. No one ever directly told me directly (and I’ve learned that these subtle truths take me much longer to figure out on my own!). Most of us spend far more energy and time on consuming than creating. So I’m telling you now: If you want a real sense of joy and contentment…create something.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, but up until a few years ago I had only journaled, recording my days, but rarely finishing a piece. I had not made the connection between creative endeavors and creation. I was just around the corner from an immense feeling of accomplishment but I had not traveled the extra fifty feet to get there.
When I began cooking a few years ago I tapped into this sense of satisfaction. I didn’t know why though. I thought it was just the immediate gratification of eating. And while eating something you have made yourself is gratifying I didn’t realize that the true underlying cause of this contented feeling was that I was in the mode of creating and when we are in the mode of creating we are tapping into one of our essential human drives. So if your day job is leaving you feeling a bit empty, I encourage you to try creating something. Preferably something you can share with others. It doesn’t much matter what it is as long as you put your own spin on it and do it from start to finish. You’ll see what I mean.
